Salt and Light represents our newest effort to make a difference from an early age. We believe that early childhood development is essential for creating lasting positive change in a person’s life.

Salt and Light is an Early Childhood Development (ECD) center where we provide education and care for children from the rural community. Our dedicated team offers nutritious meals to support their growth and well-being. Currently, the center is located on a farm 3 km outside town, where we teach the children fundamental educational skills, as well as how to care for animals, respect nature, and appreciate each other. We also provide transportation for the children to and from the center.

However, due to the sale of the farm, we are moving the center the historic Carnegie building in the local town of Hopetown, originally built in 1909. We will begin renovations as soon as we secure the necessary funds.

In addition to educating the children, we are also committed to mentoring their parents, as we believe that supporting families is crucial to our mission.

We are confident that our efforts will make a significant difference in the lives of these children and their families. If you would like to support our mission in any way, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. Your positive contributions and prayers for our project would be greatly appreciated.

<rights>Copyright (c) 2024, Gkhui Gkhui River Lodge</rights>

Raffle/Fundraiser

WHY PARTICIPATE:
Seven-year-old Noah was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

He also has coeliacs disease. To manage Noah’s insulin levels is an uphill battle. The emotional strain makes it very difficult. The specialist recommended insulin pump therapy as a solution that will help Noah with his daily lifestyle. Noah’s father, Danie, pastors a church in Marondera and him and his wife Babette really want to stay in Zimbabwe to help bring change.

WE WOULD LIKE TO RAISE MONEY FOR:

The insulin pump, the pump transmitter and CGM transmitter. The endocrinologist recommends the Medtronic 780G pump. Insulin pumps are small, computerized devices that mimic the way the human pancreas works by delivering small doses of short acting insulin continuously. This family’s medical expenses are already very high and difficult to meet. This pump comes at a huge cost but will greatly improve Noah’s life and provide him with more freedom which a boy his age deserves. They further need to pay for the monthly insulin and consumables of 557 USD per month.

Seven-year-old Joshua has Leg-Calve-perthes disease

This means there is no blood flow to the hip bone which caused the hip bone to disintegrate and causes him to limp. This disease is very rare and only 1 in 10,000 boys get diagnosed with it. He is on crutches at the moment & prohibited to do any sports for the time being. He is seeing an orthopedic doctor which will decide depending on the severity & stage if an operation is necessary. Doctors visits, scans & physiotherapy is priority if no operation is needed. Joshua’s father, Andrew, pastors a church in Hopetown and him and his wife Jaclyn has to stay in Hopetown, but would need to travel a lot to get Joshua proper medical treatment.

WE WOULD LIKE TO RAISE MONEY FOR:

His doctors and physio fees, transport to the city for doctors appointments and accommodation in the city.

The courtship behaviour of them is fascinating where the male attracts the female with a pheromone secreted by a gland situated below a small pouch (which is only visible as two small black dots) on his wings. Like small wands the male uses the hair pencils with little brushes in his abdomen to distribute small particles of the pheromone by flying over the female to induce her to sit. The whole life cycle from laying eggs, larvae, pupae to a butterfly takes less than 3 weeks.

The caterpillars (which are also unpalatable) are also rather conspicious with their striking white, black and yellow colours.

The Milkweed plant, which is originally from Australia, is often referred to as a “weed” and is a light green shrub of approximately a 1-2m high with conspicious soft-spiked fruit-capsules and drooping cream-coloured flowers.

The Milkweed plant (*Asclepias fruticosa one of the many species in the genus), was named after the *Greek God of medicine, due to its several medicinal properties. The plant yields a milky latex when a piece is broken off, often an indication of poisonous plants, which in this case is crystalline glucoside and can be lethal. The sap in large quantities causes mainly gastro-enteritis, but is reputedly very effective in treating warts if smeared on regularly and an infusion of the plant, is used to treat diarrhoea and other stomach problems.

My initial fascination with the plant was for the multiple other uses it posesses - from the fibres that can be used like a rope to the stuffing of mattrasses and pillows in the Second World War. It can also be used to keep moles and molerats abay by putting cut pieces into their holes.

The other common name “Wild Cotton” refers to the white tufts of silky hairs attached to their seeds, which only becomes visible when the pods dry out and split open.

In the past the silky threads that contain 81.5% cellulose were used in the antique “tonteldoos” lamps instead of the cloths. The plant got the nickname as “Tontelbos” meaning “Tinder bush”. The fibres can be used similar to guncotton (which is cellulose nitrate) and reputably make great firelighters.

Both the butterfly and plant are often overseen due to being so common, yet they fall nothing short of exceptional!

Skelton, P. 2001. Freshwater Fishes of Southern Africa. Struik Publishers, Cape Town

Morphological variation in Orange River Yellowfishes (Cyprinidae: Labeobarbus) Roger Bills, Martin Villet and Nick Jones

1. Colouration

In general, largemouth yellowfish has a more silver appearance and smallmouth a more yellow olive colour. This, however, is not a rule and sometimes the colour looks quite similar.

Cameron Anderson with a nice example of a silver coloured largemouth yellowfish.

2. Body form and fins

Largemouth and smallmouth yellowfish share plenty of genes and DNA studies show that they probably have a common ancestor. Bills, Villet and Jones found that smallmouth yellowfish samples from the lower Orange River differ greatly in depth and fin size.

A photo of a sample smallmouth yellowfish from the Orange River at Pella that clearly show much longer fins and a deeper body, also from the Bills, Villet and Jones

In general, largemouth has a slightly different shape than smallmouth, but to exclusively use this as an indicator can be misleading.

A drawing from Skelton 2001 that shows the general appearance and shape of a typical smallmouth yellowfish.

Drawing from Skelton 2001, that shows the general appearance and shape of a typical largemouth yellowfish.

3. Mouth

The unmistakable shape and size of the mouth of a largemouth yellowfish is normally a great way of distinguishing between the two species, but unfortunately, some smallmouth yellows have very largemouth like shaped mouths. Smallmouth yellowfish has some very interesting evolutionary features; their mouth can evolve from a rubber lipped mouth to a very largemouth like mouth in a couple of years! This obviously complicates matters.

This picture is a good example of the shape and size of the mouth of a good largemouth yellowfish.

It seems that most scientists agree that the bottom jaw is a great indicator, as largemouth yellowfish has a much longer lower jaw than smallmouth yellowfish. From photos, it is difficult to determine the exact posterior articulation point, but on the water, it is really easy to see, you literally just take the lower part of the mouth and move it, the jaw movement will clearly show the point. This is one of the features that apparently does not overlap between the two species.

This figure from the Bills, Villet and Jones study clearly shows the difference between the lower jaw of the two species.

4. Eye position

Largemouth yellowfish often hunt prey in front and probably above them, while smallmouth mostly feed on prey lower in the water column. According to Bills, Villet and Jones, this is probably the reason that smallmouth yellowfish has greater interorbital widths than largemouth yellowfish.

This figure from the Bills, Villet and Jones study shows the difference between the interorbital width of the two species.

The eyes of smallmouth yellowfish are also normally visible from the bottom of the fish; in other words, if you look at the fish from its belly, you should be able to see the eyes of a smallmouth and not that of the largemouth yellowfish. Unfortunately, this seems not to be true for all smallmouth yellowfish but is, in general, a good indicator.

These two pictures clearly show the difference between the eye position of the two species.

5. Preopercular groove

The distance from the posterior orbit to the preopercular groove is greater with the more predatory largemouth yellowfish than with smallmouth yellowfish. This seems to be the most reliable test according to Prof. Skelton.

These two photos clearly show that the distance between the preopercular groove and the posterior orbit is much larger in largemouth than with smallmouth yellowfish.

Prof. Skelton recommends the following test:

Measure the distance between the preopercular groove and the middle of the eye(x) and then the distance between the middle of the eye and the tip of the nose(y). If X is greater than y, it is a largemouth yellowfish, and if y is greater than x, it is a smallmouth yellowfish. This test is apparently very close to 100% accurate on fish larger than 100mm. But according to Bills, Villet and Jones eye size can influence snout length and the distance between the eye and preopercular groove that could influence this test in smaller fish.

From the two photos above, the test as described by Prof Skelton is quite clear.

I adapted the test a bit to make it easier to differentiate between the two species by using the properties the scientists use, as in some instances the results of the test show that X and Y are very close to the same distance. I take the same measurement for X as per the above test, but use the corner of the mouth(even if it is not that easy to get a precise location) as Y. from this test, x and y for smallmouth yellowfish is very similar(although not always in the same way as the mouthpieces of the fish often differs) and with largemouth yellowfish X is always much longer than Y. This test I have found also helps with smaller fish.

The two photos above show the authors variation on the Skelton test.

Hybrids

The question arises if hybrids between the species do exist. Mills, Villet and Jones did not find any such evidence in their study, but could not rule it out. From DNA tests they found similar genes, but tests were inconclusive. They did not, however, rule out the possibility of hybrids. Some scientists also agree that hybrids could exist. There are certainly fish that has similar attributes, whether this is due to a common ancestor or hybridisation is not clear, but in some instances, the lines are a bit blurred.

From my research, the jaw length, eye position and the preopercular groove to eye distance test seem to be the most accurate, but a combination of all these features would make things easier in practice.

<rights>Copyright (c) 2018, Gkhui Gkhui River Lodge</rights>

The women in my life and how their passion fuelled my passion

My two mothers

My mother is a true inspiration. She taught me that fear has no place in our hearts, that we should live out our passion and God-given gifts and lead a purpose-driven life.

My mother in law taught me to work extremely hard and that you are never too good to dirty your hands. From renovating the house, painting the walls, butchering the meat, gardening, designing and making curtains. From attending auctions and looking for something to renovate, to baking and cooking basically everything. You name it – we’ve done it.

My five sisters

My three sisters and my two sisters-in-law have a very special place in my heart, and each one of them taught me something very special in life.

My oldest sister taught me to create a home for your family, to lay a table even if you eat toast or porridge, and to always welcome your kids back from school with something freshly baked like muffins and rusks. Thanks to her, my home is alive and filled with special memories – even of the ordinary days.

My younger sister is the one I share my dreams with. We share our lives and passion for the farm life together. From planting pecan trees, gardening and cooking, to raising kids, working in the lodge and creating new recipes – whatever we do, we enjoy doing it together and together we mostly laugh our way through life!

My youngest sister taught me the real values in life. Even though she is the youngest she is definitely the more responsible one. She knows when to give good advice and when to just offer a shoulder to cry on.

My two sisters-in-law taught me how to think on my feet – whatever the circumstances. They take multi-tasking to a new level and they don’t sweat the small stuff. Thanks to them, I now know how to do things that I once thought were impossible, like going camping with newborn babies in the middle of the winter!

I am truly grateful for the influence of each and every woman in this blog, but also to our entire family – for always pulling together in tough times and always inspiring each other with love and passion. Life in the Karoo is definitely a journey of discovering and finding yourself and I couldn’t have done it without all of you.

<rights>Copyright (c) 2018, Gkhui Gkhui River Lodge</rights>

Special all-inclusive offer for a romantic getaway on the banks of the Orange River, near Hopetown

Your stay at Gkhui Gkhui

My best memories are of my family, friends and even strangers sharing stories and laughs around a dinner table. Our family meals were prepared with passion and love for the people at the table – and it was always received with delight and extreme gratitude.

From a young age I had a great desire to combine my two passions: people and food. I wanted to learn how to make delicious, hearty food that could unite even strangers. Inspired by my people and my environment, I decided to pursue a career in the culinary industry – to get versed in the fine art of cooking soulful meals. But hotel school and the hospitality industry was not what I expected.

Chefs training is not for the faint hearted. At 19 years old, I was working among English and French speaking chefs and getting pushed to my utmost boundaries. I was trying my best to learn as much as possible about culinary arts while dodging flying food and verbal lashings. I later realised that the most important lesson I learned was not a culinary one. It was that nothing – absolutely nothing – comes easy. For 15 years I tried to live out my passion in the hospitality industry and as a lecturer, but I never experienced the freedom of being fully creative (and myself) until I moved back to the Karoo.

At Gkhui Gkhui I could finally merge my creativity with what I have learned, apply it to the environment I love and live out my passion the way I always wanted to. And the result? Fine and hearty meals that bring people together – even strangers. Especially strangers.

<rights>Copyright (c) 2017, Gkhui Gkhui River Lodge</rights>

Fishing in Africa - why fly fishing largemouth yellowfish on the Orange River is the one you shouldn't miss

The mystical golden mahseer has played havoc in many fly fishermen’s dreams over the years. Its sheer size, predator like features and amazing colour makes it one of the world’s premier game fish. The fly fishing fraternity normally think of tigerfish when a fishing trip to Africa is planned. No doubt, the aggressiveness, teeth and acrobatics when hooked makes the river dog, as tigerfish is often referred to, a worthy advisory, add the incredible African fauna and flora and the fishing is nothing short of world class.

There is however a fish that gives both these species a run for its money, the largemouth yellowfish. Labeobarbus kimberleyensis (largemouth yellowfish) is closely related to the mahseer and it doesn’t take much to see the resemblance to their Indian cousins. The apex predator in the Vaal and Orange River systems of South Africa reach remarkable size with a known maximum of 50lbs!

Above: The largest one caught on record was by the late John Southey at Douglas, 100km downstream from Gkhui Gkhui River Lodge.

Gkhui Gkhui River Lodge is situated on a private stretch of river that is conserved and in pristine condition. With two of the largest largemouths ever caught, coming out upstream and downstream from the lodge and several respectable largemouths being caught during each season, it is just a matter of time before another monster is landed.

Their colour varies from deep yellow, green, grey to silver and white. Younger fish normally appear lighter in colour and older fish more yellow and green.

Above: French fly fishing legend, Pascal Cognard, with a nice silver coloured largemouth.

These highly sought after game fish are commonly found throughout slow runs and deep pools in the river and they tend to hang around various structures waiting in ambush. The conserved water around Gkhui Gkhui River lodge is especially healthy and clear with plenty of ideal largemouth hunting water. The Orange River is widely regarded as the superlative river to target these big fish and the stretch between Vanderkloof Dam and Douglas (where the polluted Vaal River enters the Orange River) is arguably the best stretch of this immaculate river.

These selective feeders primarily prey on other fish although they are known to also feed on crustaceans and even small nymphs and terrestrials. They aggressively strike baitfish patterns and often make long runs. They are capable of taking very large prey with their large mouth and are built like a true predator.

Even though life isn’t always easy here, something about it drew me back to our family’s farming operations after 15 years. It took me a while to acclimatise, but as soon as you start embracing the uncomfortable, raw nature that surrounds you, you start to see it for what it is. You start to realise how much life there is around you and that you can learn to manage it, to live in harmony with it and also to appreciate it.

For us, this turning point came when my husband Chris discovered a lively spot next to the mighty Orange river that flows through our farm. As a keen fly-fisherman, he helped us to realize that when we started to embrace our environment, we would start seeing all the extra potential it had. It is at this moment that Gkhui Gkhui River Lodge was born.

Suddenly, we saw past the little things like insects and other annoyances. We saw the thriving ecosystem of fascinating creatures that surrounded us and once again we could imagine children learning about nature here, men sharing stories of their latest kill around the fire and families spending quality time around a hearty homemade meal made from ingredients off this very land. Suddenly, we saw ourselves on the banks of a beautiful green river bank that we could transform into the luxurious (but wild) oasis it is today. And together with our guests, we soon realised – there is nothing quite as attractive, as sophistication in the middle of the raw Karoo!

Today, we share our wild piece of oasis with anyone who is willing to leave their usual comforts behind, stare nature in the face and say, “Bring it on.” Our fly fishing, hunting, wing shooting and white water river rafting are all ways in which you can embrace nature and live in harmony with it. And afterwards, let us spoil you with a wholesome meal made with fresh local ingredients before you retreat into your luxury, air-conditioned room for a break from the madness.

It is open, welcoming, and full of character – a true resemblance of the Northern Cape and its people. From raging rapids to calm, shallow waters – the mighty Orange river has many faces and offers something for everyone. Whether you’re seeking solitude, fun, or adventure – you will find it here on the banks of this vibrant river – and we’ll show you how.

For those who want to brave the powerful white water rapids, we’ll make sure that you’re geared and ready to make some waves. Our experienced team will find the sections that are right for you and your group – whether you’re new to white water rafting, or you’re looking for a new challenge.

The fishermen in the group can try their luck in the bustling streams around the lodge, while the R&R candidates can sunbathe on the lush green banks of the river or take a dip. Of course, your room overlooking the river has a great vantage point from which to view all of these activities, if you’d rather enjoy the outdoors from your luxurious sanctuary.

Why not end off the day with a sundowner on the deck and a delicious meal from our family-run kitchen. Exchange stories of the day’s activities around the fire before you retreat into your luxury accommodation and fall asleep to the sound of nocturnal life singing the song of the great Orange river.

9. SAFETY

9.1 Swimming
Safety on and off the river is a great concern to us. Because of the nature of the operation it is imperative that all participants are able to swim.

9.2 Wading

Wading in the Vaal and Orange Rivers can be treacherous as the rocks are slippery and often concealed. Participants must wade slowly through water and careful foot placement is imperative. If any participants have problems with their balance or any other medical conditions that prohibit an occasional fall, they must come equipped with a wading staff and attach it to their person with a lanyard.

9.3 Dangerous animals

Dangerous animals such as snakes are rarely encountered and do not pose a threat if they are left alone. The greatest risk of snakebite is at night when moving around camp and participants must have a headlamp at all times and sturdy leather shoes are highly advised

9.4 Medical conditions
Participants with any medical conditions must be aware that fishing of this nature can be strenuous and very tiring. Participants are personally responsible for all medication and must make their guides aware about any inhibiting medical conditions.

10. TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION

10.1 Credit Cards
Please note that due to the remoteness of the operation there are no credit card facilities.

10.2 GSM / cellphones
There is cellular phone coverage at the Kliphuis, but there is normally no cell phone coverage along the river but coverage is sometimes available. Participants are required to consider the serenity and ‘out of the city feel’ that other participants might enjoy. Cell phones are required to be switched to silent and phone calls are to be made in private.

10.3 Expenses

We suggest that you carry sufficient cash to settle your expenses such as tackle purchases, bar bills, personal expenses and gratuities. All accounts must be settled by the end of the trip in cash or by EFT.

<rights>Copyright (c) 2017, Gkhui Gkhui River Lodge</rights>

Win a weekend away for you and 5 friends at Gkhui Gkhui River Lodge

Entering is both simple and fun:
