MTB Challenge

The Orange River offers incredible mountain biking terrain with stunning scenery, rolling hills and river bush all set against the contrast of the daunting bo karoo. With the regulations regarding Covid-19 putting a stop to most races, a new racing concept was born.

A UNIQUE RACE

We know each race claims to be unique, we also have game, climbs, great support teams, basically all the bells and whistles you would expect from a luxury lodge hosting a cycling event on a 10 000ha private game farm, but this one is truly different, shaped by the unique requirements posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The challenge will stretch from March to September. Only teams of two cyclists will be allowed to enter. 11 Separate races of 6 teams each is planned, the 6 teams with the fastest times will qualify for the final race on 24-26 September. You and your cycling friends choose an available date in March/April/August or September that suits you, stay away from the crowds, but still have a great and challenging race!

Available slots: March 11-14, 18-21, 25-28                     April 15-18, 22-25, 29-2

                           August 5-8, 12-15, 19-22, 26-29            September 2-5

                           Final: 23-26 September

STAGE 1 (Saaidam)
Distance: 56 km

Vertical ascent: 655m

Water points: 14km   29km   42km

This stage is a combination of the Gkhui Gkhui black route and our 15km cross country route. From the lodge it’s an easy and familiar start up and away from the river, it does not take long to get into some hills with a couple of technical climbs and a bit of single-track fun. There is numerous game species around and the route takes you through their varying habitat. Once you get close to the river again, the route takes you over several hills with some fun downhills. The last 15km is more technical and all single track on our great cross-country route. Once you are in the tree canopy of the river, the finish is only 800m away!

STAGE 2 (Renekespan)
Distance: 58 km

Vertical ascent: 355m

Water points: 16km   31km    43km

Don’t be fooled by the lack of ascent, this one is a long scorcher a true endurance day.  The route starts with a gravel road, through the game farm Saaidam towards the R369 with a constant climb as you move away from the river. Once you enter Renekespan, you enter the home turf of our national antelope, the Springbuck. Expect long flat sections, with circle routes around two salt pans, and then the gradual decent back towards the river via Elandsdraai.

STAGE 3 (Elandsdraai)
Distance: 44km

Vertical ascent: 605m

Water points: 12km    25km    35km

Elandsdraai was named after the Cape Eland that to this day inhabits the hills of the on the property. From Gkhui Gkhui River Lodge the route follows the jeep tracks into the heart of the habitat of the biggest antelope found in Africa. Expect plenty of hills, speedy flat sections through bo karoo vegetation before turning back towards the Orange River. Enjoy the view from the famous red cliffs and then tackle the final stretch through river bush, a technical section and then the final decent down to the lodge.
